Read down the columns and watch the gapping collapse. A scratch golfer steps 24 yards from 3-wood to 5-wood and 14 more to the 7-wood. A 25 handicap steps 12 and then 4. At the high end of the handicap range those three clubs have collapsed into roughly one and a half.

Two Shot Scope numbers, one club
Our golf club distance chart puts a 15 handicap’s 3-wood at 215 yards of total distance. The P-avg table above says 212. Close enough that either works as your benchmark.
The 5-wood is where it gets messy. A third Shot Scope pull has a 15 handicap averaging 208 yards with a 5-wood. The P-avg table above says 190 for the same club and the same handicap. That’s an 18-yard disagreement inside one company’s database, probably down to which shots each pull counted and what it called the metric.
So compare within a table, never across them. Pick one source for your whole bag and read the steps between clubs.
Driver or 3-wood off the tee
Driver, wherever the hole allows it. Shot Scope ran the comparison across roughly 80 million tracked shots and found the driver averaging 225 yards against the 3-wood’s 203, with fairways hit at 46.6% and 47.4%. Twenty-two yards for eight tenths of a percentage point.
Shot Scope’s own conclusion: “you should hit Driver wherever it is reasonable to do so.” Their second analysis of the same question found the 3-wood hitting 1.5% more fairways and reached the same verdict. Shot Scope frames those 20 to 30 yards as roughly two clubs less into the green, which it ties to golfers being “12-15% more likely to hit the green” after a driver. That conversion is Shot Scope’s own, so treat it as their read rather than a measured split.
Arccos measured it independently and landed in the same place. Driver hit 45.5% of fairways against the 3-wood’s 46.4%, with median distances of 226 and 214 yards. Even measured as distance from the centerline rather than fairways hit, the 3-wood’s edge was 3.1 percentage points inside 30 yards. Arccos put the question plainly: “Is losing an entire club distance worth 3.1% (30y)/2.3%(40y) improved accuracy? Probably not, although it would depend on the course.”
Both databases land in the same place. Pull the 3-wood off the tee when a specific hazard makes the driver a bad bet, and leave it in the bag the rest of the time.
3 hybrid vs 5 wood distance
Both clubs cover the same yardage window and produce different results. Shot Scope pulled distance, greens hit, proximity, and shots to finish for each one across three handicap groups.

Green-hit rates that low mean the pull counted every swing with the club, tee shots and layups included, rather than approaches only. Those columns compare two clubs in the same hands. They do not measure approach quality.
The 15 handicap row is the one to sit with. The 5-wood goes 15 yards farther and hits about half as many greens. Proximity to the hole is 82 feet better with the hybrid. Across all handicap data, MyGolfSpy reports that the 3-hybrid “saves .3 strokes compared to a 5-wood.”

3-wood vs 3 hybrid distance
The 3-wood sits a full step above the 5-wood and the 3-hybrid. Ping builds it at 15 degrees and 43 inches against the 3-hybrid’s 20 degrees and 40 1/4 inches, which is 5 degrees and nearly 3 inches of difference, or roughly two clubs. Comparing their yardages directly is a trap, since the 212-yard 3-wood figure is a performance average and the 193-yard 3-hybrid figure comes from a different pull. Treat them as clubs for different distances, and settle the slot in between on the 5-wood numbers above.
Lofts and lengths behind the decision

The 5-wood and the 3-hybrid sit 1 degree apart. They sit 2 1/4 inches apart in length. Judged on loft alone those two clubs do the same job. The 2 1/4 inches of extra shaft is what separates them, and a shorter club being easier to control is the likeliest reason the hybrid finds more greens. Shot Scope published the outcome without testing the cause, so treat that as the explanation behind the numbers rather than a measured finding. Every model in both lines adjusts plus or minus 1.5 degrees, roughly half a club, so a wood sitting slightly off its slot can often be tuned rather than replaced.
The 3-wood at 43 inches is the longest club most golfers ever swing off the ground. A driver is longer, and a driver gets a tee.
When the 3-wood earns its slot
- You use it off the tee on holes where driver brings a hazard into play. That is a specific job on specific holes.

- You can launch it off turf. Fifteen degrees off a tight lie is the hardest full swing in the bag, and the shot that decides whether this club is worth carrying.

The gapping trap under the 3-wood
Look at the bottom two rows of the first table again. At a 25 handicap the 5-wood and 7-wood are 4 yards apart. At a 20 handicap, 8 yards. Two slots, one distance.
