Three caveats you should carry with you. The club rows are on-course results including roll and including mishits, so your carry for each club usually runs shorter. The two datasets sample different groups of golfers, so read the pairing as directional rather than as one measured population. And TrackMan’s bogey-golfer figure sits nearer an 18 handicap than a 20, which is the Shot Scope column it lines up against. The wedge rows get noisy at the high-handicap end, where fewer full swings get tracked.

Most readers land in the middle three columns. An earlier TrackMan pull, written up by Golf.com, put the overall average at 93.4 mph, with more than 40% of measured golfers swinging between 91 and 100 mph. TrackMan’s current page says 94, so treat the two as the same number. The spread between a 10 handicap and a bogey golfer is 3 mph.

TrackMan publishes the same measurements for professionals, which gives the amateur rows something to sit against:

Look at the last two columns of that table together. The average male amateur swings within 2 mph of an LPGA Tour player. TrackMan’s own comment on it: “we would expect the average male amateur to hit their driver as far as the average LPGA Tour player. However, the actual difference is more than 20 yards.”

Where those 20 yards go

TrackMan points at ball speed, launch angle, and spin rate as the variables to tune, on top of club speed and strike quality. Ball speed is the one with published numbers on it. The average male amateur makes 133 mph of ball speed at 94 mph of club speed, and an LPGA player makes 143 at 96. A 10 mph ball speed gap sits alongside a 2 mph club speed gap, and TrackMan reckons 10 mph of ball speed is worth about 20 yards. How the remainder splits between launch and spin isn’t published, so treat those as the other levers rather than a measured share.

The ratio between those two numbers is smash factor: ball speed divided by club speed. TrackMan’s published driver figures by handicap, from its Combine averages:

Those are handicap-group averages rather than measurements of one golfer’s swings, so dividing ball speed by club speed won’t reproduce the smash factor column exactly. Read each column on its own. Smash factor is where centered contact shows up in yards. TrackMan’s target is near 1.50 with a driver and near 1.25 with a pitching wedge, because a lofted face sends more of the energy into spin than into forward speed.

What 1 mph is actually worth

TrackMan’s rule of thumb: “Adding 1 mph of Club Speed can increase your distance by up to 3 yards.” The matching ball speed rule is up to 2 yards per mph.

The word doing the work there is up to. Those are ceilings for a well-struck drive with sensible launch and spin, and a 1 mph gain delivered through the toe of the club buys nothing. The sober planning figure comes from Golf Digest, quoted by Golf.com: roughly 2.5 extra yards per mph. Dividing tour carry by tour club speed lands in the same 2.3 to 2.5 range, but that division is an average across players rather than a measure of what your next single mph would add. Plan on 2 to 3 yards and don’t budget for the ceiling.

1 mph apart, 23 yards apart

TrackMan measures a 10 handicap at 95 mph and its average 14.5 handicap golfer at 94 mph. One mile per hour apart. Shot Scope’s tracked driver distance for those same bands: 259 yards and 236 yards.

One mph of club speed cannot account for 23 yards. What the pairing shows is two bands that sit close together on speed and far apart on distance. It cannot tell you how the remainder divides between strike quality, launch, spin, club choice, and the plain fact that these are two different samples of golfers. The same shape repeats further down the table: from a 10 handicap to a bogey golfer TrackMan’s club speed drops 3 mph while tracked on-course distance drops much further.

Strike quality, launch, spin, and club choice are the candidates, and every one of them is cheaper to chase than 5 mph of speed. Club choice is the cheapest of the four. An Arccos study of over 6 million approach shots found 40% finishing short of the green and only 5% long, which looks like the signature of clubbing off a remembered best strike instead of a median carry.

How to find your swing speed without a launch monitor

You have two decent options and one bad one.

  1. Use a Doppler radar. A consumer speed radar reads club speed directly. Garmin quotes the Approach R10 at plus or minus 3 mph for club speed and plus or minus 1 mph for ball speed, and Plugged In Golf’s review found it “well within those parameters the vast majority of the time” outdoors. Watch that tolerance against the chart: a 3 mph error is as wide as the entire 95 to 92 mph span, so a radar can put you in the top or bottom half of the table but cannot separate a 10 handicap from a bogey golfer. Those columns sit almost on top of each other, which is the finding above.
  2. Work backward from ball speed. If you can get ball speed from a simulator bay or a cheap monitor, divide it by the smash factor TrackMan publishes for your handicap. At 133 mph of ball speed and a 1.44 smash, that math gives about 92 mph, while TrackMan’s own table pairs 133 mph of ball speed with 94 mph of club speed. Those 2 mph of daylight are roughly the accuracy of the method, so report a band like 92 to 94 and skip the decimal.
  3. Don’t reverse-engineer it from a range session. A Golf.com robot test measured a range ball flying 12 yards shorter than a premium ball with a driver, 8 yards shorter with a 5-iron, and 4 yards longer with a pitching wedge, spinning half as much. Club speed survives the range ball because it’s measured at the club. Carry does not.

Whichever route you take, hit 10 to 15 swings and use the median. Your fastest swing of the day is not the one you’ll make on the 14th tee.

Turn your speed into gaps

Your speed picks your row on the chart. What you do inside that row is the part you control, and it’s where most bags leak strokes.

Fitters generally want 10 to 15 yards of carry between consecutive clubs. Ping’s Marty Jertson gives a speed-scaled version: take your 7-iron ball speed in mph and divide by 10. At 100 mph of ball speed, that’s roughly 10-yard gaps through the irons. Slower ball speed scales those gaps down, and a set built around someone else’s speed won’t scale with you.
